It is, like silk, a product of the earth's own cycles — and when eaten lightly, in the evening, it supports the body's transition from the yang of day to the yin of night.
Traditional Chinese medicine has always understood food as medicine — not in the sense of pharmaceuticals, but in the sense that what you introduce into your body shapes its internal landscape. A bowl of lotus seed soup, a cup of warm water with jujube, a simple congee with seasonal vegetables — these are not health hacks. None of this is an argument against technology. The AI that generated your meditation script is a genuine achievement. The device in your pocket is a marvel. But marvels are not the same as necessities, and the fact that we can do something does not mean it is what we need to do.
The Taoist tradition does not ask us to reject the new. It asks us to evaluate every choice against a single criterion: does this bring me closer to or further from the natural way? A weekly walk in the park brings us closer. A few minutes of meditation brings us closer. A bed dressed in silk brings us closer. A meal grown from soil brings us closer. These are not anti-technology choices. They are pro-nature choices, and the distinction matters.
In the AI era, the most valuable things will not be the things that technology creates. They will be the things that technology cannot create — the feel of wind on skin, the smell of earth after rain, the weight of a silk quilt against a tired body, the silence of a mind that has been given permission to rest. These things cannot be generated. They can only be received. And receiving them requires something that no algorithm can provide: presence.
