Could Sleep Restriction Therapy Be the Key to Better Sleep?

Could Sleep Restriction Therapy Be the Key to Better Sleep?

There is an old paradox in the way of water: it does not fight the stone, yet in time, it shapes the mountain. Sleep is much the same. The harder you chase it, the faster it retreats. And yet, there exists a therapy built on exactly this counterintuitive truth — Sleep Restriction Therapy (SRT).

AFENG has walked many moonlit paths. And this one, though it sounds strange at first, leads somewhere worth going.

What Is Sleep Restriction Therapy?

Sleep Restriction Therapy is a core component of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) — widely regarded by sleep scientists as the most effective long-term treatment for chronic insomnia, more durable than medication alone.

The premise is simple, if a little uncomfortable: instead of spending eight or nine hours in bed hoping sleep will come, you compress your time in bed to match only the hours you are actually sleeping. This builds what researchers call sleep drive — the biological pressure that makes sleep deep, efficient, and satisfying.

Over time, as sleep quality improves, the window is gradually extended — until you reclaim the full, restorative nights you deserve.

The Taiji Paradox: Less Becomes More

In Taoist philosophy, there is a concept called wu wei — effortless action, or the wisdom of not forcing. The Tao Te Ching teaches: "To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders."

Sleep Restriction Therapy embodies this principle. By releasing the desperate grip on sleep — by accepting a shorter window rather than lying awake in frustration — the body's natural rhythms are allowed to reassert themselves. You stop fighting the river. You learn to flow with it.

This is not weakness. This is the deepest form of intelligence.

How Sleep Restriction Therapy Works

A typical SRT programme unfolds in three phases:

Phase 1 — Compress. A sleep specialist (or a structured CBT-I programme) calculates your average actual sleep time — say, five and a half hours. Your time in bed is then restricted to that window, with a fixed wake time each morning, regardless of how the night went.

Phase 2 — Rebuild. As sleep efficiency rises above 85–90% (meaning most of your time in bed is spent actually sleeping), the window is extended by 15–30 minutes. This process repeats week by week.

Phase 3 — Stabilise. Over weeks, you arrive at a sleep window that is both sufficient and deeply efficient. The anxiety around sleep — often the true engine of chronic insomnia — begins to dissolve.

Is Sleep Restriction Therapy Right for You?

SRT is particularly well-suited for those who:

  • Spend long hours in bed but sleep poorly
  • Wake frequently through the night
  • Have developed anxiety or dread around bedtime
  • Have tried sleep hygiene tips without lasting results

It is generally not recommended without professional guidance for those with bipolar disorder, seizure disorders, severe sleep apnoea, or certain occupational safety requirements (such as operating heavy machinery during the adjustment period).

As with all things on the path to wellness, wisdom lies in knowing when to walk alone and when to seek a guide. If in doubt, consult a sleep physician or licensed CBT-I practitioner.

Creating the Right Environment for SRT

Sleep Restriction Therapy works from the inside out — but your environment matters too. When your sleep window is compressed, every minute of sleep must count. This is where the quality of your sleep sanctuary becomes essential.

At Taiji Sleep, we believe the bed is a sacred space — a place of transition between the world of doing and the world of being. Our pure mulberry silk bedding is designed to honour that transition:

  • Temperature regulation: Silk's natural thermoregulating properties keep you cool when you run warm and gently warm when the night turns cool — reducing the micro-awakenings caused by temperature fluctuation.
  • Sensory calm: The smooth, weightless drape of silk against skin signals safety and softness to the nervous system — helping the body release the tension that keeps sleep at bay.
  • Reduced friction: For those who toss and turn, silk's low-friction surface moves with the body rather than against it, minimising disturbance.

When you are working to rebuild your relationship with sleep, every element of your environment should be working with you — not against you.

AFENG's Closing Reflection

"Water is the softest thing on earth, yet it can wear away the hardest stone. Be like water. Do not force sleep — invite it."
— Inspired by the Tao Te Ching

Sleep Restriction Therapy asks something courageous of you: to trust the process even when it feels counterintuitive. To spend less time in bed in order to sleep more deeply. To release control in order to find rest.

This is the Taiji way. And it works.

If you are ready to transform your nights, begin with your environment. Explore the Taiji Sleep silk collection — and let the journey toward effortless rest begin.

Join the Monthly Blessing Journey

Every month, we journey to ancient temples and Taoist sanctuaries across China — lighting incense, offering prayers, and carrying the intentions of our members into sacred spaces. Those who walk with us for six months or more will receive, at year’s end, a curated collection of sacred tokens gathered from the altars and shrines along our path — small objects that hold the memory of incense smoke, mountain silence, and whispered prayers. Each piece travels from a place of stillness to find its way to you.
