Here's what animals can teach us about sleep

Humans aren't the only creatures who need sleep — virtually every animal on Earth sleeps in some form. And by studying how different species sleep, scientists have uncovered fascinating insights into why we sleep, what sleep is for, and how we might sleep better. Here's what the animal kingdom can teach us.
Sleep is universal — and ancient
From fruit flies to elephants, sleep appears to be a fundamental biological necessity. Even simple organisms like jellyfish and worms exhibit sleep-like states, suggesting that sleep evolved very early in the history of life. This universality tells us something profound: sleep must be doing something so essential that evolution has preserved it across hundreds of millions of years.
Dolphins and whales: the art of sleeping with one eye open
Dolphins and many whales practice unihemispheric sleep — sleeping with one half of the brain at a time while the other half remains awake. This allows them to continue swimming, breathing, and watching for predators while still getting rest. Dolphins have been observed swimming slowly in circles with one eye open and one eye closed for hours at a time.
What this teaches us: The brain has remarkable flexibility in how it achieves rest. It also suggests that the restorative functions of sleep can be partially decoupled from full unconsciousness.
Giraffes: the world's shortest sleepers
Giraffes sleep only about 30 minutes to 2 hours per day — one of the shortest sleep durations of any mammal. They rarely lie down (which makes them vulnerable to predators) and instead take brief standing naps. Yet they appear to function perfectly well on this minimal rest.
What this teaches us: Sleep needs vary enormously across species and are shaped by evolutionary pressures. For giraffes, survival trumps sleep quantity. For humans, the pressures are different — but the principle that sleep serves survival remains.
Bats and brown bears: champion sleepers
On the opposite end of the spectrum, little brown bats sleep up to 20 hours per day. Bears hibernate for months, entering a state of dramatically reduced metabolism and consciousness. During hibernation, bears' body temperature drops, heart rate slows, and they live off stored fat — all while their brains continue to cycle through sleep stages.
What this teaches us: Sleep is deeply intertwined with metabolism and energy conservation. The restorative functions of sleep — tissue repair, immune function, memory consolidation — continue even in dramatically altered states.
Migratory birds: sleeping on the wing
Some migratory birds, such as the alpine swift, can remain airborne for months at a time during migration. Research using EEG recordings has confirmed that these birds can sleep while flying — using unihemispheric sleep to rest one brain hemisphere at a time while maintaining flight control.
What this teaches us: The brain's need for sleep is so fundamental that it has evolved extraordinary mechanisms to achieve it even under the most demanding circumstances.
Elephants: social sleep
Wild African elephants sleep only about 2 hours per night — the least of any land mammal studied. They sleep standing up for most of this time, lying down for REM sleep only every few days. Interestingly, elephants in captivity sleep significantly more, suggesting that the demands of finding food and water in the wild constrain their sleep.
What this teaches us: Environmental demands profoundly shape sleep behavior. When basic needs are met and safety is assured, animals (including humans) sleep more and better.

- Safety enables sleep: Animals sleep more deeply when they feel safe. Creating a secure, comfortable sleep environment is not a luxury — it's a biological necessity.
- Sleep is non-negotiable: No animal has evolved to not need sleep. Attempts to eliminate or drastically reduce sleep always come at a cost.
- Quality matters as much as quantity: Many animals achieve restoration in surprisingly short periods when their sleep is deep and uninterrupted.
- Environment shapes sleep: Temperature, light, noise, and safety all profoundly affect sleep quality across species — including ours.
