How cognitive shuffling can quiet racing thoughts at bedtime
Share
You're lying in bed, exhausted — but your mind won't stop. You're replaying conversations, planning tomorrow, worrying about things you can't control. Sound familiar? A technique called cognitive shuffling may be exactly what you need. It's simple, science-backed, and surprisingly effective.
What is cognitive shuffling?
Cognitive shuffling is a sleep-onset technique developed by cognitive scientist Dr. Luc Beaudoin at Simon Fraser University. The idea is to deliberately generate a random, disconnected sequence of mental images — essentially scrambling your thoughts — to mimic the kind of thinking the brain naturally produces as it drifts toward sleep.
The science behind it
As we fall asleep, our thoughts naturally become more random, fragmented, and illogical — a state called hypnagogia. This is the brain's way of disengaging from waking consciousness. When we lie awake with racing thoughts, we're stuck in a coherent, narrative mode of thinking that keeps the brain alert.
Cognitive shuffling works by interrupting this coherent thinking and replacing it with the kind of random, non-threatening imagery that signals to the brain: it's safe to let go now. It essentially tricks the brain into thinking sleep has already begun.
How to do cognitive shuffling
Step 1: Choose a random, emotionally neutral word — something like "hammock," "umbrella," or "cinnamon." Avoid words with strong emotional associations.
Step 2: Spell the word out letter by letter in your mind. For each letter, visualize a random object or scene that begins with that letter. Hold each image in your mind for a few seconds before moving on.
Example: For the word "LAKE":
- L — imagine a lemon, bright yellow, sitting on a wooden table
- A — picture an astronaut floating in space
- K — visualize a kite flying over a green hill
- E — see an elephant splashing in a river
Step 3: When you finish the word, choose another random word and repeat. Continue until you drift off to sleep.
Why it works better than counting sheep
Counting sheep is repetitive and boring — which means your mind can easily wander back to anxious thoughts while counting. Cognitive shuffling requires just enough mental engagement to keep you from ruminating, while the randomness and visual nature of the imagery prevents coherent, worry-inducing thought patterns from forming.
Tips for best results
- Choose words that are truly random and neutral — avoid words related to your worries or to-do list
- Focus on vivid, sensory details in each image — color, texture, movement
- Don't try too hard. The goal is gentle, drifting attention, not intense concentration
- If you catch yourself thinking coherently about something, gently return to your word and images
- The mySleepButton app, developed by Dr. Beaudoin, can guide you through the process if you prefer audio prompts
Who can benefit from cognitive shuffling?
Cognitive shuffling is particularly helpful for people who experience:
- Racing or intrusive thoughts at bedtime
- Anxiety-related insomnia
- Difficulty "switching off" after a busy or stressful day
- Overthinking or rumination
It's a drug-free, side-effect-free technique that can be used alongside other sleep hygiene practices.
The bottom line
If a busy mind is keeping you awake, cognitive shuffling offers a gentle, evidence-informed way to quiet the noise. It takes a little practice, but most people find it effective within a few nights. Give it a try tonight — pick a word, close your eyes, and let your imagination wander.
Join the Monthly Blessing Journey
Every month, we journey to ancient temples and Taoist sanctuaries across China — lighting incense, offering prayers, and carrying the intentions of our members into sacred spaces. Those who walk with us for six months or more will receive, at year’s end, a curated collection of sacred tokens gathered from the altars and shrines along our path — small objects that hold the memory of incense smoke, mountain silence, and whispered prayers. Each piece travels from a place of stillness to find its way to you.
If you seek inner peace, a deeper connection to your truest self, and the timeless wisdom of the Tao, we warmly invite you to join the Taiji Sleep Monthly Blessing Membership.
