How to Adjust to Daylight Saving Time & Reset Your Body Clock

What Daylight Saving Time Actually Does to Your Body
Daylight saving time (DST) is not merely an inconvenience. It is a forced circadian disruption — and the biological consequences are measurable, significant, and well-documented.
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) — the brain's master circadian clock, located in the hypothalamus — is entrained primarily by light. It does not respond to the social convention of clock-changing. When the clock moves forward by one hour in spring, the SCN continues operating on the previous light schedule while the social world demands behavior one hour earlier. The result is a form of acute circadian misalignment equivalent to flying one time zone west overnight.
The health data on this misalignment is striking. A 2019 study in the BMJ Open Heart found a 24% increase in heart attacks in the days following the spring DST transition. A 2020 study in Current Biology found a 6% increase in fatal traffic accidents in the week after the spring transition. A 2014 study in the Journal of Applied Psychology found a significant increase in workplace injuries and cyberloafing in the days following DST. The lost hour of sleep is not trivial. It is a public health event.
The fall transition — gaining an hour — is less acutely dangerous but produces its own disruption: the earlier darkness triggers earlier melatonin onset, which can cause early evening drowsiness and early morning waking for weeks, disrupting sleep architecture and mood.
What China Never Had to Unlearn
AFENG traces the circle of the twenty-four solar terms in the air.
"The Chinese calendar system — the 二十四节气 (Èr Shí Sì Jié Qì), the Twenty-Four Solar Terms — divides the year into 24 periods based on the sun's actual position in the ecliptic. Each term marks a specific shift in light, temperature, and natural energy — and prescribes corresponding adjustments in sleep timing, diet, activity, and emotional orientation. This is not astrology. It is the world's oldest evidence-based circadian health system."
The Solar Terms do not move the clock. They move the human. As the light changes across the year, the recommended sleep and wake times shift gradually — earlier in summer (more Yang, less sleep needed), later in winter (more Yin, more sleep required). The body is never asked to make a sudden one-hour adjustment. It is guided through continuous, gradual alignment with the actual light environment.
The TCM twelve-organ body clock (十二时辰) operates on solar time, not social time. The Liver's peak detoxification window (1–3am solar time) does not shift because a government decree moved the clock. The body's biology follows the sun. DST creates a gap between the social clock and the solar clock — and the body pays the price of that gap.
The Taoist principle of 顺应自然 (Shùn Yìng Zì Rán) — following and responding to nature — is the antidote to DST disruption. You cannot change the government's decision. You can realign your body with the actual light environment as quickly and deliberately as possible.
7-Day Eastern Body Clock Reset Protocol
AFENG draws a simple seven-day plan in the earth. It begins with light.
Day 1–2: The light anchor. The fastest way to reset the circadian clock is through light exposure. On the morning of the DST transition and the day after, get outside within 15 minutes of the new wake time — even if it feels too early, even if it is dark. The SCN responds to the first bright light of the morning as the day's anchor signal. Outdoor light (even overcast) provides 10,000–50,000 lux — far more than any indoor environment. In the evening, dim all artificial lights aggressively from the new 9pm onward. The contrast between bright morning and dim evening is the primary signal the SCN uses to set circadian timing.
Day 1–2: Shift meal timing immediately. The circadian clock is entrained not only by light but by food timing — specifically, the timing of the first meal of the day (which signals "morning" to peripheral clocks in the liver, gut, and metabolic organs) and the last meal (which signals "evening"). On Day 1, eat your first meal at the new clock time, even if you are not hungry. Eat your last meal at least 3 hours before the new intended sleep time. This accelerates peripheral clock resetting and reduces the duration of circadian misalignment.
Day 3–4: The Hai Shi recalibration. Shift your pre-sleep ritual to the new 9–11pm window immediately — do not allow it to drift to the old time. The 亥时 (Hài Shí) protocol: dim lights at new 9pm, warm foot bath (activating Yongquan KD-1, which TCM associates with grounding and sleep preparation), silk sleepwear, Dantian breathing. The consistency of the ritual at the new time teaches the nervous system the new schedule faster than any single intervention.
Day 3–4: Tai Chi or Qigong at the new morning time. Physical activity in the morning — particularly slow, rhythmic movement like Tai Chi — reinforces the circadian anchor established by morning light. The combination of light exposure and physical movement produces a stronger phase-shifting signal than either alone. Even 15 minutes of slow outdoor Tai Chi at the new wake time accelerates the body clock reset by an estimated 1–2 days compared to indoor sedentary morning behavior.
Day 5–6: Address the sleep debt. The spring DST transition creates acute sleep debt — one hour, compounded by the disrupted sleep architecture of the adjustment period. Do not attempt to recover this debt through weekend lie-ins (which will re-anchor the clock to the old time). Instead, move bedtime 15–20 minutes earlier for 3–4 nights, allowing gradual debt recovery without circadian re-disruption. The Taoist principle of 渐 (Jiàn) — gradual, incremental change — applies here. The body clock shifts most stably through small, consistent adjustments.
Day 5–6: The Twenty-Four Solar Terms adjustment. DST transitions occur near the equinoxes — the 春分 (Chūn Fēn, Spring Equinox) and 秋分 (Qiū Fēn, Autumn Equinox) in the Solar Terms calendar. These are natural transition points in the annual light cycle — moments when the TCM prescription shifts sleep and activity timing. Spring Equinox: begin rising slightly earlier, sleeping slightly less, increasing outdoor activity. Autumn Equinox: begin retiring slightly earlier, sleeping slightly more, reducing stimulation. Use the DST transition as a prompt to make these natural seasonal adjustments — aligning the social clock change with the biological season change.
Day 7: Consolidation. By day 7, most people have substantially realigned their circadian rhythm to the new schedule — if the light, meal, movement, and sleep timing interventions have been consistently applied. The final consolidation: maintain the new schedule through the following weekend without exception. The circadian clock is most vulnerable to re-disruption in the first two weeks after a phase shift. One late night or sleep-in can reset the progress of the entire week.
The Silk Variable
During circadian disruption, the body's thermoregulatory system — which is tightly coupled to the circadian clock — becomes temporarily dysregulated. Core body temperature rhythms shift out of phase with the social schedule, making sleep onset and maintenance more difficult even when the timing is correct.
Silk bedding's hygroscopic properties — its ability to absorb and release moisture to maintain the optimal thermal microclimate around the body — provide passive thermoregulatory support during this adjustment period. When the body's own temperature regulation is temporarily disrupted, the sleep environment's thermal stability becomes more, not less, important. This is not a marketing claim. It is the physics of silk protein and the biology of sleep thermoregulation.
The Deeper Lesson

Daylight saving time is a reminder of something the Twenty-Four Solar Terms never forgot: the human body is a solar organism. It runs on light. It is calibrated by the sun's position, not by the position of clock hands. Every time we move the clock, we are reminded — briefly, painfully — of how far we have drifted from the natural time system our biology was built for.
顺应自然。 — Follow and respond to nature. The clock will change again in six months. The sun will not. Build your rhythms around the one that doesn't move.
The panda adjusts his bamboo hat to the angle of the morning light. This is the only clock adjustment he makes. It is enough.
