AFENG: In Taoist tradition, sound is understood as a form of Qi — vital energy that moves through the body and the environment, influencing the systems it contacts. The ancient practice of Liu Zi Jue — the Six Healing Sounds — uses specific vocalizations to regulate the Qi of different organ systems. The sound associated with the kidneys — the organ most connected to Jing and deep restoration in Taoist medicine — is a soft, sustained exhalation: "Chui."

This is not mysticism. It is the practical application of a principle that modern neuroscience confirms: specific sound frequencies and patterns produce specific physiological responses. The vagus nerve — the primary pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system — is directly stimulated by sound, particularly low-frequency vibration and slow, rhythmic auditory input. This is why humming, chanting, and slow music all promote calm: they are directly activating the body's rest-and-digest system through the auditory pathway.

Q: How do you build a personal sleep music ritual?

AFENG: Five steps. Simple. Consistent. Compounding.

1. 🎵 Curate your sleep playlist deliberately. Spend 20 minutes assembling a playlist of 60–80 BPM instrumental music that feels genuinely calming to you. This is a one-time investment that pays dividends every night. Include enough music to last 45–60 minutes — longer than your expected sleep onset time.

2. 🔔 Set a sleep timer. Most music apps allow you to set a timer that stops playback after a set period. 30–45 minutes is usually sufficient. This prevents the music from disrupting sleep architecture in the later stages of the night.

3. 📢 Use a speaker, not earbuds. Sleeping with earbuds is uncomfortable and can cause ear canal irritation over time. A small, warm-toned Bluetooth speaker placed across the room provides ambient sound without physical discomfort. Volume should be low — audible but not attention-demanding.

4. 🌬️ Pair the music with breathing. As the music begins, take five slow breaths — inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6 — and allow your breath to synchronize with the music's tempo.
