Among the Eight Immortals of the Taoist tradition, Zhang Guolao is the one who makes people look twice. He rides a white donkey — but he rides it facing backwards, seated toward the animal's tail, moving through the world in the opposite direction from everyone else. When he reaches his destination, he folds the donkey up like paper and tucks it into his gourd. When he needs it again, he unfolds it with a splash of water.

The Taoist tradition is full of paradox, but Zhang Guolao's backwards ride is one of its most enduring images. Scholars have interpreted it as a symbol of non-conformity, of the reversal of ordinary perception, of the sage who sees what others miss precisely because he is oriented differently. All of these readings are valid. But there is another interpretation, one that becomes visible when you look at Zhang Guolao through the lens of sleep science and the TCM body clock:

He is the patron saint of everyone who lives against their biological time.

The Backwards Ride of Modern Life

Approximately 20 percent of the working population in industrialized countries works shifts that require them to be awake during the hours when their biology expects sleep, and asleep during the hours when their biology expects wakefulness. Nurses, factory workers, pilots, security guards, emergency responders, convenience store clerks, data center operators — the infrastructure of modern civilization runs on people who ride backwards through the body clock.

And then there are the rest of us: the people who do not technically work night shifts but who, through the accumulated choices of the digital age, have effectively become shift workers by choice. The person who cannot put down their phone until 1 AM. The entrepreneur whose best ideas come at midnight and who has restructured their life around a schedule that their biology was never designed to support. The frequent traveler whose body clock is perpetually somewhere between here and there. For shift workers: strategic light management. Those who cannot avoid working against their body clock can mitigate the damage through deliberate light management. Bright light exposure during the work shift helps shift the clock toward the required schedule. Blue-light blocking glasses during the commute home prevent the morning light from resetting the clock before sleep. Blackout curtains and a cool, quiet sleep environment during daytime sleep hours reduce the circadian penalty of the unavoidable backwards ride.

The Immortal's Secret

Zhang Guolao lived, in the legend, for centuries. He rode backwards, folded his donkey, and moved through time in ways that ordinary mortals could not follow. The Taoist tradition does not explain his longevity through effort or discipline alone — it attributes it to his alignment with the deeper rhythms of the Tao, the underlying order of things that persists beneath the surface chaos of ordinary life.

The circadian rhythm is, in this sense, one of the body's most direct expressions of the Tao — the ancient, unhurried cycle of light and dark, activity and rest, that has governed life on this planet since before the first human being looked up at the sky and tried to understand what they saw.

To live in alignment with it is not a sacrifice. It is a return. The donkey, turned to face forward, moves more easily. The body, given the darkness and the quiet and the consistent timing it was designed for, does what it has always known how to do.

The immortals did not conquer time. They learned to move with it. That is the secret the backwards ride was always pointing toward.
