Want to sleep better? These 10 healthy sleep habits can help
Share
Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for your health — yet it's often the first thing we sacrifice. If you've been waking up groggy, struggling to fall asleep, or simply not feeling rested, the good news is that small, consistent habits can make a dramatic difference. Here are 10 science-backed sleep habits to help you get the rest you deserve.
1. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule
Your body runs on a circadian rhythm — an internal clock that regulates when you feel sleepy and when you feel alert. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day (yes, even on weekends) reinforces this rhythm and makes falling asleep easier over time.
2. Create a dark, cool sleep environment
Your bedroom temperature and light levels send powerful signals to your brain. Aim for a room temperature between 60–67°F (15–19°C) and use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block light. Even small amounts of light can suppress melatonin production.
3. Ditch screens at least one hour before bed
The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and laptops tricks your brain into thinking it's still daytime. Power down devices at least 60 minutes before sleep, and consider switching to warm-toned lighting in the evening.
4. Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening
Caffeine has a half-life of about 5–6 hours, meaning that afternoon coffee could still be affecting you at midnight. Alcohol, while it may help you fall asleep initially, disrupts REM sleep and leads to fragmented rest.
5. Exercise regularly — but not too close to bedtime
Regular physical activity improves sleep quality and helps you fall asleep faster. However, vigorous exercise within 2–3 hours of bedtime can raise your core body temperature and heart rate, making it harder to wind down.
6. Build a relaxing pre-sleep ritual
Signal to your body that sleep is coming. This could be a warm bath or shower, gentle stretching, meditation, reading a physical book, or brewing a cup of herbal tea. Consistency is key — the ritual itself becomes a sleep cue over time.
7. Keep naps short and early
A 20-minute power nap can restore alertness without affecting nighttime sleep. But long naps or napping after 3 PM can make it harder to fall asleep at night and disrupt your sleep cycle.
8. Manage stress and anxiety
A racing mind is one of the most common barriers to sleep. Try journaling before bed to offload worries, practice deep breathing exercises, or use a mindfulness app. If anxiety is chronic, consider speaking with a therapist.
9. Invest in quality bedding
Your sleep surface matters more than you might think. Natural silk pillowcases and bedding regulate temperature beautifully — keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter — while being gentle on skin and hair. The tactile comfort of premium materials can ease the transition into sleep.
10. Reserve your bed for sleep only
Working, scrolling, or watching TV in bed trains your brain to associate the bed with wakefulness. Keep your bed a dedicated sleep sanctuary, and your brain will start to automatically shift into sleep mode when you lie down.
The bottom line
Better sleep doesn't happen overnight — but with consistent habits, you can transform your rest within weeks. Start with one or two changes, build from there, and pay attention to how your body responds. Your future well-rested self will thank you.
Join the Monthly Blessing Journey
Every month, we journey to ancient temples and Taoist sanctuaries across China — lighting incense, offering prayers, and carrying the intentions of our members into sacred spaces. Those who walk with us for six months or more will receive, at year’s end, a curated collection of sacred tokens gathered from the altars and shrines along our path — small objects that hold the memory of incense smoke, mountain silence, and whispered prayers. Each piece travels from a place of stillness to find its way to you.
If you seek inner peace, a deeper connection to your truest self, and the timeless wisdom of the Tao, we warmly invite you to join the Taiji Sleep Monthly Blessing Membership.
