What Are Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn Responses? Plus How to Cope

AFENG watches a deer at the edge of the forest. It freezes. Then bolts. Then, finding safety, begins to graze again as if nothing happened. He nods slowly.
"The deer does not apologize for freezing. It does not analyze why it ran. It completes the cycle and returns to baseline. Humans are the only animals who interrupt this process — and then wonder why they cannot settle."
The Four Survival Responses
You have heard of fight and flight. But the nervous system has four primary threat responses — and understanding all four is the beginning of understanding why you react the way you do under stress.
These responses are not choices. They are automatic, subcortical, and extraordinarily fast — initiated by the amygdala before the prefrontal cortex has time to form a single conscious thought. They evolved over millions of years to keep organisms alive. In the modern world, they are often triggered by emails, social dynamics, and performance pressure — threats that require none of the physiological responses they activate.
Fight — the mobilization response. Threat detected; the body prepares to confront it. Adrenaline surges. Heart rate and blood pressure rise. Muscles tense. Jaw clenches. The prefrontal cortex narrows its focus to the threat. In humans: anger, aggression, irritability, the urge to argue, control, or dominate.
Flight — the escape response. Threat detected; the body prepares to flee. Same adrenaline surge, but directed toward speed rather than strength. In humans: anxiety, avoidance, workaholism, compulsive busyness, the inability to sit still — all forms of running from something that cannot be outrun.
Freeze — the immobility response. Threat assessed as inescapable; the nervous system shuts down active response and enters a state of tonic immobility. Heart rate drops. Dissociation occurs. Time distorts. In humans: procrastination, emotional numbness, inability to make decisions, the paralysis that descends when overwhelm becomes total.
Fawn — the appeasement response. First described by trauma therapist Pete Walker, fawning is the social survival strategy: when fight, flight, and freeze are not viable, the nervous system attempts to neutralize the threat by becoming maximally agreeable. In humans: people-pleasing, difficulty saying no, chronic self-erasure, the compulsive need to manage others' emotions at the expense of one's own.
The Neuroscience: Three Layers of the Nervous System
Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, developed in the 1990s and now one of the most influential frameworks in trauma neuroscience, describes three hierarchical states of the autonomic nervous system:
The ventral vagal state — the social engagement system. Safe, connected, regulated. This is the baseline from which learning, creativity, and genuine relationship are possible. Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn are all departures from this state.
The sympathetic state — mobilization. Fight and flight live here. The body is activated, energized, and directed toward action. Useful in genuine emergencies. Chronically exhausting when the threat is a spreadsheet.
The dorsal vagal state — immobilization. Freeze lives here. The oldest, most primitive branch of the vagus nerve shuts the system down when threat is assessed as total. Dissociation, numbness, collapse.
Fawn operates across the sympathetic and ventral vagal boundary — a learned social strategy that mimics connection while actually serving threat-avoidance.
What the Five Elements Saw

"Traditional Chinese Medicine mapped the relationship between organs, emotions, and survival responses 2,000 years before Porges. The Five Element system assigns specific emotions to specific organ systems — and those emotions, when dysregulated, produce recognizable behavioral patterns."
Liver (肝, Gān) — Anger — Fight. The Liver governs the smooth flow of Qi and is associated with the emotion of anger (怒, nù). When Liver Qi stagnates under chronic stress, it erupts as irritability, aggression, and the fight response. The Liver's season is spring — the energy of pushing through, of assertion. Dysregulated, it becomes force.
Kidney (肾, Shèn) — Fear — Flight. The Kidney governs the body's foundational energy and is associated with fear (恐, kǒng). Kidney Qi deficiency produces the chronic low-grade fear that drives the flight response: anxiety, avoidance, the compulsive need to escape. The Kidney's season is winter — the energy of conservation and retreat. Dysregulated, it becomes running.
Spleen (脾, Pí) — Worry — Freeze. The Spleen governs digestion — of food and of thought. Its associated emotion is worry (思, sī). When Spleen Qi is overwhelmed by excessive thinking and unprocessed information, the system freezes: rumination replaces action, decision becomes impossible, the mind loops without resolution. The freeze response, in TCM, is Spleen Qi collapse.
Lung (肺, Fèi) — Grief — Fawn. The Lung governs boundaries — the skin, the breath, the capacity to take in and release. Its associated emotion is grief and worry (愁, ūi). When Lung Qi is deficient, the boundary between self and other becomes porous. The fawn response — the dissolution of self in service of others' comfort — is, in TCM terms, a Lung Qi boundary failure.
Heart (心, Xīn) — Shen — Regulation. The Heart governs the Shen — the spirit, consciousness, and the capacity for genuine social connection. A regulated Heart Shen is the TCM equivalent of Porges' ventral vagal state: present, connected, responsive rather than reactive. All four survival responses represent a departure from Heart Shen regulation.
How to Cope: Eastern Tools for Each Response
AFENG sits down. "The goal is not to eliminate the response. It is to complete the cycle and return."
For Fight — move the Liver Qi. The fight response generates enormous physical energy that must be discharged before the nervous system can settle. Tai Chi's 推手 (Tuī Shǒu) — Push Hands — is the ideal tool: it channels the fight energy into structured, boundaried physical engagement without escalation. Alternatively, the Six Healing Sounds Liver tone — 呕 (xū), a soft exhalation through a rounded mouth — directly releases Liver Qi stagnation. Do either for 5–10 minutes after a fight-response activation before attempting any conversation or decision.
For Flight — strengthen the Kidney root. The flight response is driven by Kidney fear — the sense that the ground is not safe. Kidney Qi breathing (hands on lower back, slow inhalation visualizing dark-blue warmth filling the kidneys) rebuilds the foundational sense of safety that flight erodes. A warm foot bath activating the Yongquan point (KD-1) grounds the energy downward — the opposite direction from flight. 15 minutes before sleep prevents the day's flight energy from becoming the night's insomnia.
For Freeze — move the Spleen Qi gently. The freeze response requires gentle, non-demanding movement to restart. Cloud Hands (云手) — slow, continuous, requiring just enough attention to interrupt the loop — is ideal. Do not attempt vigorous exercise from a freeze state; the system will resist. Start with 5 minutes of slow walking, weight shifting fully from foot to foot. The bilateral movement restarts the Spleen's digestive function — both physical and cognitive.
For Fawn — restore the Lung boundary. The fawn response requires rebuilding the sense of self that it erodes. Chest-opening Qigong — arms wide, chest expanding, the physical enactment of taking up space — directly counteracts the physical collapse of the fawn posture. The Six Healing Sounds Lung tone — 呢 (sī) — supports Lung Qi boundary restoration. Journaling — writing what you actually feel, want, and need, without editing for others' comfort — is the cognitive equivalent.
The Return to Baseline
The deer at the edge of the forest does something that humans rarely do: after the threat passes, it shakes. Literally — a full-body tremor that discharges the residual stress hormones from the survival response. Then it grazes. The cycle is complete.
Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing therapy is built on this observation: the body knows how to complete the stress cycle if we allow it. The Eastern practices above — movement, sound, breath, touch — are all ways of allowing the body to do what it already knows.
Sleep is the nightly version of this completion. During slow-wave sleep, cortisol drops to its daily minimum. During REM, emotional memories are processed and their charge reduced. The body shakes off the day's survival responses — if the sleep is deep enough, long enough, and undisturbed enough to complete the cycle.
Silk bedding, darkness, and a consistent pre-sleep ritual are not luxuries in this context. They are the conditions under which the nervous system can finally, fully, return to baseline. The deer grazes again. The Shen settles. The cycle completes.
AFENG watches the deer disappear into the forest. He does not follow. He returns to stillness. The baseline was always here.
