AFENG Says: The Ancient Art of Waking Slowly — Why "Hurkle Durkle" Is the Morning Ritual You've Been Missing

"The sage does not rush to greet the day. The day will arrive whether you chase it or not."
— AFENG, guardian of rest, student of Taiji
Greetings, weary traveller. I am AFENG — a panda of few words and many naps. Today, I wish to share with you a concept that has brought me great joy: the Scottish art of hurkle durkle.
Yes, the Scots. Even in the cold mists of the highlands, they understood something that the ancient Taoists knew long before them: the transition from sleep to wakefulness is sacred, and it should not be rushed.
What Is Hurkle Durkle?
To "hurkle durkle" is to linger luxuriously in bed long after the moment one could technically rise. It is not laziness. It is not avoidance. It is, in the language of Taiji, the practice of wu wei — effortless non-action — applied to the morning.
In Chinese medicine, the hours between 5 and 7 AM belong to the Large Intestine meridian — a time of gentle release, not forceful beginning. The body is still completing its nightly restoration. To leap from bed at the first alarm is to interrupt this process like a student who leaves the exam before finishing the last question.
What the Body Knows That the Alarm Clock Does Not
When you jolt yourself awake, your body floods with cortisol — the stress hormone. This is useful if you are being chased by a tiger. It is less useful if you are simply trying to make tea.
Hurkle durkle, by contrast, allows the body to complete its natural waking arc:
- Lower morning cortisol — your nervous system begins the day in calm, not crisis
- Balanced qi flow — in Taiji philosophy, energy (qi) needs time to rise gently from the lower body upward, like morning mist from a still lake
- Clearer mind — the prefrontal cortex needs 15–20 minutes to fully awaken; wisdom cannot be rushed
- Emotional steadiness — a slow start creates a calm baseline that carries through the entire day
AFENG's Morning Hurkle Durkle Practice
I have refined this ritual over many seasons of careful observation (and considerable personal research). Here is what I recommend:
- Set your alarm 20 minutes before you must rise. This is your gift to yourself — guilt-free, intentional stillness.
- Do not reach for your phone. The world's problems will still be there in 20 minutes. Your nervous system will thank you for the delay.
- Practice the Taiji body scan. Begin at your feet. Notice warmth, tension, ease. Move slowly upward. This is self-knowledge, not laziness.
- Breathe with intention. Inhale 4 counts, hold 4, exhale 6. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's "rest and restore" mode.
- Stretch within your silk. Small, slow movements. Point the toes. Roll the shoulders. Let the body remember it is alive before asking it to perform.
The Bed You Linger In Matters
I will be honest with you, friend: hurkle durkle in scratchy cotton is a diminished experience. The practice reaches its full potential when your skin is cradled in mulberry silk — cool in summer, warm in winter, smooth against the face like morning mist on bamboo.
At Taiji Sleep, we have designed our silk bedding for exactly these moments. Not just for sleeping, but for the sacred in-between — the soft, unhurried space where the night ends and the day has not yet begun.
This is where restoration lives. This is where AFENG lives.

Join the Monthly Blessing Journey
Every month, we journey to ancient temples and Taoist sanctuaries across China — lighting incense, offering prayers, and carrying the intentions of our members into sacred spaces. Those who walk with us for six months or more will receive, at year’s end, a curated collection of sacred tokens gathered from the altars and shrines along our path — small objects that hold the memory of incense smoke, mountain silence, and whispered prayers. Each piece travels from a place of stillness to find its way to you.
