Not all mountains are equal. Not all Mao Feng is the same.

Huangshan produces Mao Feng across many of its valleys and slopes. But within Huangshan, there is a place that tea growers speak of differently: Nianyuan — the inner sanctum of the mountain, where the altitude is higher, the mist is thicker, the soil is richer in minerals, and the temperature swings between day and night are wider than anywhere else on the mountain.

These conditions do something to the tea. They slow it down. They force the leaves to develop more slowly, to accumulate more of the compounds that create flavour and fragrance. The result is a Mao Feng with a characteristic that sets it apart from all others: a natural orchid fragrance that emerges not from processing, but from the land itself.

This is terroir. This is what place tastes like.

✦ Three Grades, One Origin

• First-Grade Twisted Mao Feng — 200g (Gift Box) — the entry point into Nianyuan; tightly rolled leaves that unfurl slowly, releasing the orchid fragrance in waves; presented in a gift box that makes it as beautiful to give as it is to drink; the tea for someone who deserves something real
• Grade One Mao Feng — 200g — a step up in leaf uniformity and fragrance clarity; the orchid note is more pronounced, the finish longer; for the daily drinker who has learned to notice the difference between good and exceptional
• Pre-Qingming Special Grade — 200g — the pinnacle; Mingqian buds from Nianyuan's highest gardens, harvested in the brief window before Qingming when the leaves are at their most tender and the orchid fragrance at its most intense; this is the grade that tea collectors seek out and that converts casual drinkers into devoted ones; smooth, sweet, complex, and gone too quickly

✦ The Orchid Difference

Most green teas are described as "fresh" or "grassy" or "vegetal." Nianyuan Mao Feng is described as orchid. This is not a marketing claim. It is a geological fact: the specific mineral composition of Nianyuan's soil, combined with the altitude and the mist, produces a natural floral compound in the leaves that no processing technique can replicate or substitute.

You either grow in Nianyuan, or you don't have this fragrance.

✦ How Afeng Brews It

Water at 80°C — always. A glass cup, so you can watch the leaves open. Pour slowly. Then wait. The orchid fragrance will rise before the leaves have fully unfurled — that is your signal that the tea is ready.
